Question 1
What is Attendance Allowance? How do I find out if my elderly mother qualifies for it?
Attendance Allowance (“AA”)is a non means-tested benefit available to those aged over 65 who need attention or supervision as a result of their state of health. It is now paid at a lower rate of £41.65 per week (where help or supervision is only needed during the day) or at a higher rate of £62.25 per week (where help or supervision is needed both day and night). Award of AA is subject to independent medical examination. There is a “fast track” procedure for terminal cases. Those in residential or nursing care that is paid for out of public funds or who are in reciept of the Scottish Executive’s “free personal care” allowance cannot claim the benefit.
